The Immunological Characteristics of Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes and Tumor Draining Lymph Node Lymphocytes in Advanced Stomach Cancer

Abstract

|
It has been known that lymphocytes infiltrate in and around the malignant tumor. However, the characteristics and function of the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes are not known clearly. It is not known whether the lymphocytes infiltrate the tumor
without
any purposes for they are in there with a specific purpose such as to control the growth of the tumor. Same is true with the lymphocytes of tumor-draining lymph node.
In order to answer the questions, the following experiments were done. Tumor masses, perigastric lymph nodes, and peripheral blood were taken from 34 patients with advanced gastric cancer. Single-cell suspensions of lymphocytes from those
sepecimens
were evaluated in terms of the cytotoxicity against K562 and Daudi cell lines, and surface phenotyping.
The cytotoxicity of the lymph node lymphocytes and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes was lower than that of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The portion expressing natural killer cell (CD16, CD56, CD57) of the lymph node lymphocytes and
tumor-inffiltrating
lymphocytes were also lower than that of peripheral blood lymphocytes. There was no difference between tumorinvolved lymph nodes and non-involved lymph nodes in terms of the cytotoxicity and the surface marker of the lymphocytes.
